I just spent quite some time pecking out a long post. It was about sadness and loss and misplaced priorities, recognized too late, and about a lovely, gentle hand never held and now never to be held. I really poured my heart out in it. (Let the laugh riot begin now.)

But it seems that at some point while laboriously hunting-and-pecking it out I was logged out or logged off the board without my knowledge. So when I finally and wearily clicked on the Submit button, I was taken to the log-in page. I clicked on the Back arrow, and went back and forth frantically looking for my post, but it was no more.

This kind of thing happens to me very frequently. In fact, I would say the majority of my posts vanish into the ether or the ozone or somewhere, rather than successfully posting. So what anyone who even cares ever sees of what I write is only a small, nearly random sample, and not necessarily representative of what I really think. It's rather like archaeology that way, in that much of what survives to be dug up is a pretty random collection of stuff which can be interpreted various ways and may or may not tell us much about what was really going on back when. Or like radio waves coming in from unknown sources in outer space.

Even if I were capable of remembering exactly what I wrote before (which I am not), I'm too worn out to try to reproduce it now. The moment has passed. Also, I need to go send an e-mail to someone.

Nothing to laugh about, Cross - I'm sorry it happened.

But seriously - if we had a buck for every time we've told you how to overcome that we'd have many dollars.

Once more for good luck (the triumph of hope over experience):

- Open Notepad (IIRC, Start-->Programs-->Accessories-->Notepad).

- Type your post into Notepad, saving it regularly.

- When you've finished, select the post using your mouse or CTRL A.

- Copy it to the clipboard using Edit-->Copy or CTRL C.

- Open a new message window on the Board. Click in it and paste the contents of the clipboard into it using Edit-->Paste or CTRL V.

Problem solved.

I think this makes the twelfth or thirteenth time you've explained this to him.

I don't really understand the directions. I have no idea what "Notepad" is, and I have no idea how to "Save" anything. The only way I've ever been able to deliberately avoid or dodge this problem is to highlight and "Copy" my post before posting it. Then, if my post vanishes becaue I have been logged out without my knowledge, or due to some kind of "SQL Error" or something, I can just "Paste" it back in and try again. But a lot of times I am so worn out after composing and pecking out a long post that I just forget to do that.

Wow, this hernia or whatever it is is really hurting. I really don't want to have surgery. I've been reading up on hernia repair surgery and there's something like a ten percent chance of complications. That seems like a high percentage to me. Even if there are no complications, I'd certainly be immobilized for a while, unable even to get up and go to the bathroom. I really have to go to the bathroom a LOT. I don't like the idea of having to use a bedpan. My "normal" bathroom procedures are pretty elaborate now. I don't think I can deal with just having to lie there in my own waste.

And even once I could stand up and walk at all, I'd be very lmited in what could do for quite a while, maybe two months, or even three months. Would I even be able to get up all these stairs? I don't suppose I'd be able to lift and carry a case or even a half-case of beer, or a gallon of milk, or much of anything weighing over a pound. I wish this could have waited until I got moved into some place more suited for a semi-invalid I guess I am about to become.

And here I was worrying and fretting about when I was ever going to be able to get something done about my teeth, and then this hits me. I can't even definitely pinpoint what brought it on. It certainly wasn't weight gain. On the contrary, I've lost a fair amount of weight lately, actually below 160 pounds a few times I weighed. It's funny, when I was young I was always trying to get up over 160 pounds. They've sold us a bill of goods about weight. They've led us to believe if one maintains a normal weight one will be magically immune to every sort of health problem.

A simpler way to do it is to copy your message (click on message window, Ctrl a, Ctrl c) before you hit submit, then if you get logged out or whatever, all you have to do when you get to the message window again is hit Ctrl v.

Try following the instructions above.

To save, click File-->Save.

Nasty! Have you checked drugstores for a truss? I believe that they apply pressure to the hernia to hold it in. Not a cure, but they could reduce the pain and discomfort.

On the other hand, that's 90% chance of no complications. That doesn't sound too bad to me.

That's interesting - I haven't read that one. Obviously I've been reading the wrong things.

On the hernia: my understanding is that complications are 90%+ if you DON'T get it treated.

A simple tip on the board: hit PREVIEW frequently (it's to the left of SUBMIT). This will keep you logged in, and even allow you to proofread. 'Course the SQL will still get you, though I think you can hit the back button and go where you were (even with the SQL still in effect).

No, if the SQL gets you and you back up you'll probably lose your post. Instead, keep hitting F5 to reload and when it asks if you want to resend say yes.
